In the early hours of Thursday morning, after a lengthy impassioned debate between members of the political parties, Alliance Party MLAs Trevor Lunn’s and Stewart Dickson’s proposed amendment to legalise abortion, right up to the moment of birth, in cases where an unborn child has been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition was defeated by 59 votes to 40.

Alliance Party MLA Anna Lo’s proposed amendment to legalise abortion in cases where an unborn child has been conceived in rape or incest, also right up to the moment of birth, was defeated by 64 votes to 32.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has requested that Health Minister Simon Hamilton establish a working group, with the involvement of clinicians, legal professionals, and mothers and fathers whose unborn babies were diagnosed with life-limiting conditions, to allow proper consideration of the matter by the Executive and the Assembly.

Bernadette Smyth, the director of Precious Life, the leading pro-life group in Northern Ireland, commented on the defeat of the amendments:

“Firstly, Precious Life would like to thank all the MLAs who respected the views of the people by voting against these evil amendments. In the face of such ferocious pressure to legalise the killing of unborn children, they had the wisdom, the courage, and true compassion to see that abortion is not the answer. They did the right thing, which was to protect mothers and uphold the right to life of all unborn children.

“Secondly, we would like to thank all the good people who responded readily to the threat of legalised abortion by constantly lobbying their elected politicians and making the effort to attend the Vigil for Life outside Stormont on Tuesday evening.

“Last night’s results make clear that a vote for Sinn Fein, the Alliance Party or the Green Party in the upcoming election is a vote for the killing of unborn children. Precious Life will ensure that the protection of all unborn children is an election issue, and we will expose every MLA who voted in support of these evil amendments.

“Finally, we look forward to contributing to discussions in the working group and advising on better provision of perinatal hospice care in every hospital throughout Northern Ireland.”
