In an astonishing and appalling vote, the British Medical Association betray women, passing ‘extreme’ UK abortion motion

At their annual meeting in Bournemouth on Tuesday morning, the British Medical Association voted in favour of a radical motion committing it to campaigning for abortion on demand, for absolutely any reason, up to 28 weeks gestation. Although earlier this week, almost 1,500 doctors and medical students openly revolted over the move to secure the backing from the BMA to allow abortion up to birth, the organisation stunningly passed the motion by a two-thirds majority, against the wishes of concerned and angered doctors. At a point in time where we as a society know so much about the development and humanity of the unborn child in the womb, the passing of the extreme abortion motion has stunned and angered many. It is easy to understand why the move will be met with public outcry and contempt, seeing as the BMA now stand opposed to the 70% of women in the UK who want to see the time limit for abortions reduced.

The go-ahead to such a disturbing proposal comes as a recent ComRes poll from this May found that a mere one per cent of women in the UK would actually support a move to extend the abortion time limit above 24 weeks. One doctor in particular told the Mail on Sunday that he predicted many of his medical colleagues would quit the union if the motion was given the green light by the BMA. Dr John Campbell, who is Professor of General Practise at Exteter University, said, "It would be outrageous if this were passed and would lead to many doctors reviewing their position in respect to membership of the BMA. I would do that and I have been a member for 35 years."

In the run up, there was public outcry from around 1,500 doctors and medical students, who rebelled against the motion, signing a letter of concern amid fears it would bring the medical profession into disrepute. The letter thoroughly rebuked the proposal, labelling it “extreme” and stated that if it were to be passed, serious implications included placing the BMA’s professional reputation at risk. The letter firmly stated, “If these measures were to be implemented, it would mean the introduction of abortion for any reason, to at least 28 weeks and possibly up to birth.”

“As doctors and medical students we strongly urge the British Medical Association to reject this extreme motion,” the letter stated. The doctors’ letter was unambiguous and unequivocal in its denouncement of the proposed scrapping of the UK abortion time limit:  “This extreme motion does not reflect the moderate and reasonable views of the majority of British women and the general public on this issue, and would severely damage the reputation of both the BMA and the medical profession,” it read.

The hypocrisy of the move is rampant, when medical professionals across the board have acknowledged that there is “never a medical necessity for abortion.” One striking testimony, that of former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino comes to mind. He told the Citizens’ Assembly back in March: “I saw hundreds of patients with serious problems in pregnancy; out of control diabetes, heart disease, cancers, where the pregnancy was a true threat to their lives…I have terminated hundreds of pregnancies in my career to save women’s lives, and I didn’t have to kill a single baby in the process.”

It is crystal clear that the BMA has betrayed all of us who take seriously healthcare for expectant mothers in favour of an extremist agenda completely non-reflective of mainstream views on abortion and in line with the depraved, callous and indifferent ‘up to birth’ attitude of the abortion industry.
