A motion calling for abortion UP TO BIRTH in NI has been proposed by councillors from Alliance and Sinn Fein

A motion calling for abortion up to the moment of birth in Northern Ireland has been proposed by Alliance Party Councillor, Kate Nicholl, and seconded by Sinn Fein Councillor, Mary Ellen Campbell. This motion is set to be debated by the Belfast City Council on Monday evening (9th April). The motion advocates the total decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland, consequentially removing all rights from Northern Ireland’s preborn children.

The wording of the motion is as follows:

"This Council notes the increasing number of women who are accessing abortion pills via the internet, which leaves them vulnerable to prosecution.

The Council further notes the impact on healthcare professionals who, under Section 5 of the Criminal Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1967, may have a duty to provide information to the Police Service. Therefore, if a woman requires medical assistance after accessing these pills, the threat of prosecution and life in prison is likely to act as a real deterrent, thus potentially having a detrimental impact on her health.

Accordingly, the Council believes that abortion should be regulated like any other medical care and not by criminal law, while still enabling incidents of malpractice to be addressed, as with any other health service, through the general criminal law or medical disciplinary procedures.”

What this motion is really calling for is the complete erosion of our life-saving laws. To decriminalise abortion in Northern Ireland would completely strip all protection from preborn children and their mothers leaving these children and their mothers completely vulnerable to a greedy industry who’s only concern is profit. In true reality the motion means abortion for any reason on demand, up to the very moment of birth.

Ahead of this meeting, we are asking you, your family and friends, to urgently ring or email the Belfast City Council and your councillors to express your outrage and contempt for this pro-abortion motion which is attacking our life-saving, pro-life laws that protect both mother and child. Right now, our babies and women need your voice!

Our life-saving laws, the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and the Criminal Justice Act (NI) 1945, ensure that our mothers and unborn children are protected.

We encourage you to use these specific points below as a guide when contacting your councillors:

1) To ensure the safety of women and babies these dangerous websites that advertise and sell illegal abortion drugs must be closed down. The City Council must laisse with the PSNI to ensure these websites selling these dangerous drugs are prohibited. Not only are these abortion drugs dangerous, they are also illegal. These despicable websites that are inciting women to break the law and kill their unborn children must be investigated and those providing these lethal pills must be held to the full account of the law.

2) Real healthcare saves lives while abortion intentionally destroys life. The law in Northern Ireland protects and saves both mother and child. In fact, Northern Ireland is one of the safest places for women to give birth in the world. In fact, Northern Ireland is among the safest places for women to give birth. Over nearly fifty years of legalised abortion in Britain, higher abortion rates have run parallel to higher incidences of stillbirths, premature births, low birth-weight neonates, cerebral palsy, and maternal deaths as direct consequences of abortion. In contrast, Northern Ireland of course displays lower rates of all illnesses and deaths associated with legalised abortion.

3) Women in Northern Ireland are safer without abortion. There is no such thing as a “safe” abortion. Whether illegal or legal, the after effects of abortion are the same. Since 2001, at least twenty-two women worldwide have died from fatal complications from the abortion pill, including haemorrhage, toxic shock, sepsis, organ failure, and ruptured ectopic pregnancy following an early abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol (the abortion pill).

4) Women in crisis pregnancies need to be fully informed of the dangers of these abortion drugs. Women deserve better than the likes of Women on Web or any other organisation who exploit women and kill their unborn children. What they really need real help and support. Abortion is not the answer. Stanton Healthcare Belfast is here to provide that loving care and practical support. We are here to empower women to make the right choice which upholds the value and dignity of both mother and baby.
