Why Your Vote Matters in the upcoming Stormont Election

The deadly threat against the lives of unborn children diagnosed with life-limiting disabilities has been gaining momentum in the political realm in Northern Ireland.

On 11th February 2016, Alliance MLAs Trevor Lunn and Stewart Dickson proposed an amendment to legalise the killing of unborn children diagnosed with life-limiting disabilities, right up to the moment of birth. Thankfully, because of pressure placed on Stormont politicians by the people of Northern Ireland, it was defeated by 59 votes to 40.

But the Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International, the Alliance Party, the Green Party, Sinn Féin, and others will not rest until abortion is legalised and the cries of little disabled babies who are ‘delivered early’ and left struggling for breath until they die haunts every hospital in Northern Ireland.

On 5th May 2016, you will have an opportunity to elect six politicians to represent your constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Rest assured that between now and the next election in five years’ time, there will be another attempt to change the law to allow abortion in the above cases.

That is why we are urging you to vote for the political candidates who will not cower in the face of ferocious pressure to legalise the killing of disabled unborn children but will stand strong in his or her defence of all unborn children.

Guide To Northern Ireland’s Political Parties’ Views On Abortion

ALLIANCE PARTY:  This party claims that abortion is a matter of ‘individual conscience’ for its members. Alliance Party leader David Ford and MLAs Chris Lyttle, Trevor Lunn, Stewart Dickson, and Stephan Farry voted in support of an amendment that would have legalised abortion for unborn children with life limiting conditions right up to birth. A vote these candidates is a vote for the killing of unborn children. For the position of the other candidates, contact (028) 9032 4274 or email alliance@allianceparty.org.

DUP: The DUP has historically been opposed to abortion and voted against the amendment. For the sake of the future generation of unborn children in Northern Ireland, it is vital that the DUP does not waver in its pro-life stance and keeps its pro-life promise. Contact (028) 9047 1155 or email info@dup.org.uk.

GREEN PARTY: This party supports the introduction of abortion on demand right up to birth in Northern Ireland. A vote for the Green Party is a vote for the killing of unborn children. Contact (028) 9145 9110 or email info@greenpartyni.org.

SDLP: The SDLP claims to be “a pro-life party”. The party voted against the amendment, however, this was reportedly mainly due to its concern that the amendment was not “workable”. There is a very real concern that a number of MLAs within the party support the fatal discrimination of disabled unborn children. For reassurance of individual candidates’ pro-life position, contact (028) 9024 7700 or email info@sdlp.ie.

SINN FÉIN: At its Ard Fheis in March 2015, Sinn Féin updated its policy to support abortion in cases of ‘fatal foetal abnormality’ right up to birth. Sinn Féin voted in support of the amendment. During the debate, Chief Whip Caitríona Ruane said: “Our entire team is here tonight. We will support [the] amendment [...] and we urge every individual in the House to do so.” This party also supports abortion in cases of rape and incest.  A vote for Sinn Féin is a vote for the killing of unborn children. UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NORTHERN IRELAND: Abortion is a matter of individual conscience for members. For the position of its individual candidates, email office@ukipni.com.

ULSTER UNIONIST PARTY: The UUP is divided on abortion. Some members are pro-life and some are pro-abortion. You Must Act Now!

Before you vote on 5th May, inform yourself of where the political candidates in your constituency stand on the abortion issue.

If they cannot promise to defend the right to life of unborn children in every circumstance, they cannot be considered suitable candidates for Stormont, no matter how laudable their other policies may be. If a candidate is unwilling to protect the life of a little disabled unborn baby or an unborn baby in any other case, how can he or she respect your value and dignity as a human being? Without the right to life, all other rights, privileges and promises are meaningless.

Red Letter Day

We are calling on you to make Friday 29th April a RED LETTER DAY for unborn children. We need you, your family, and friends to bombard political candidates by phone, email, facebook, twitter, or by calling into their offices with one question:

  • “If elected, will you defend the right to life of all unborn children?”

You can help protect the lives of our unborn children by distributing our "Your Vote Matters" leaflets in your area. For a list of all the political candidates in your constituency, their contact details, click here.  For leaflets to distribute or for more information, please contact 028 9027 8484 or email info@preciouslife.com.

On Thursday 5th May 2016, make your vote count for our unborn children.
