Derry Pro-Life People protest outside offices of SDLP and Sinn Fein

Precious Life joined voters in the Foyle constituency who were protesting outside the offices of the SDLP and Sinn Fein today (20 April) The protests were held outside offices of the SDLP’s Mark H. Durkan and Sinead McLaughlin, and Sinn Fein’s Padraig Delargy and Ciara Ferguson.

Speaking at the protests, Precious Life’s Bernadette Smyth stated, “The SDLP and Sinn Fein have betrayed both Ireland’s unborn babies and the people of Derry. These Parties support the British Government's plans to over-ride the Assembly and fully commission abortion here, allowing babies to be killed right up to the moment of birth.

“SDLP and Sinn Fein MLAs have also voted in support of killing babies with disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome and Cleft Lip. They supported the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland, yet supported the criminalisation of people in Derry who pray outside abortion centres.”

The SDLP’s Sinead McLaughlin caused a storm on social media last week when she showed utter contempt for people in the Foyle constituency who want babies in the womb to be protected from abortion. In a leaked video that was circulated widely online, a gleeful Sinead McLaughlin boasts of her ‘success’ in moving along other SDLP Party Members to her pro-abortion position. She also admitted she wants the killing of babies in the womb to be ‘normalised.’

Mrs Smyth explained, “Sinead McLaughlin is an extreme pro-abortionist who supports killing unborn babies, for any reason, right up to the moment of birth.

“She exposed her total disrespect and condescension for the people of Derry when she said, ‘I'm sick of going around doors hearing this never ending [question], 'what's your opinion or what's not your opinion on abortion? …seriously, it's 2022, go and get a life!"

“Her arrogant use of the phrase ‘get a life’ is all the more contemptible just after boasting of her support for abortion, which is the death of babies.

"Following the online backlash she received for her comments, McLaughlin took to social media in a vain attempt to issue an ‘apology’ to try stop the enormous damage she has caused to her own electoral campaign. But it's too little too late - the damage has been done. The people of Derry don’t want any political representative who is ‘sick’ of listening to their concerns.

"We are delighted to hear that the people of Derry are answering Precious Life’s call to challenge pro-abortion candidates on the doorsteps. The fact that Sinead McLaughlin admits she is ‘sick of it’ goes to show the large numbers of the electorate in Derry who are sending out a clear message to her – Go SAVE a LIFE – and restore protection for all unborn babies."

Bernadette Smyth concluded, "Sinead McLaughlin, Mark H. Durkan, Brian Tierney, Padraig Delargy and Ciara Ferguson are not the only pro-abortion candidates standing in the Foyle constituency. When candidates from UUP, Alliance, Green Party, PBP or IRSP arrive on your doorstop asking for your vote, ask them do they acknowledge the right to life of unborn babies, and if not, tell them you will not give them your vote. We urge the people of Derry to vote only for pro-life candidates in the Election on 5th May and return MLAs to the Assembly who will protect babies in the womb."
