Precious Life condemn UK Government for allowing babies to be killed by abortion in their own homes.

Precious Life has condemned the UK Government for allowing babies to be killed by abortion in their own homes.

'Pill by post' abortions, which were brought in as a temporary measure during the Covid lockdowns, were set to be scrapped this summer but are now to become a permanent measure under a new law.

Spokeswoman for Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said, "The UK Government stand condemned for allowing these unsupervised DIY abortions to be carried out at home. We already know the government have no respect for the right to life of babies in the womb. But they have now shown they do not care about women.

"The abortion providers cannot ensure that these pills they prescribe are taken within the 10 week limit. This will only increase the risk of severe complications and late abortions. And it is impossible to ensure the woman is on her own during a phone consultation. So this only increases the risk of women being coerced into an abortion.

"Women deserve to be fully protected by the law. 7% of British women have been pressured into an abortion by their husband or partner. But the government’s new law on these ‘pill-by-post’ home abortions will decrease the chance of detecting whether a woman or girl is in an abusive situation.

She added, "An average of 36 women a month in England and Wales made 999 calls after experiencing complications from DIY home abortion pills. A Sky News documentary on the scheme stated that 5% of women who have DIY home abortions will suffer complications that may need follow-up treatment or surgery."

Last year in England and Wales, there was a record number of nearly 215,000 abortions. According to government statistics, more than 107,500 babies were killed using the ‘pills by post’,

The Government also announced the DIY home abortion pills will be made available to children. They said guidance for providing home abortion pills to under-age girls will soon be published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Bernadette Smyth concluded, "All abortions are wrong, but these DIY home abortions are particularly abhorrent - not only because of the babies that will be killed, but also the serious dangers they cause to young girls and women. Precious Life will continue our campaigns to protect unborn babies and their mothers from all abortions."

HOW DO “DIY ABORTION PILLS” WORK?

The 'pills by post' consist of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, taken at least 24 hours apart.  Women take mifepristone first. This kills the baby by cutting off blood and nourishment. The second pill causes the woman severe cramping, contractions with heavy bleeding, and forces the dead baby out of her womb. She can lose her baby anytime and anywhere (even down the toilet) during this intense and painful process, which can last from a few hours to several days. At least 22 women have died from haemorrhage, toxic shock, sepsis, organ failure and ruptured ectopic pregnancy following an early abortion with these pills. Between 2019 and 2020, emergency calls for follow-up care after home abortions increased by 54%, and ambulance responses rose by 19%. The Care Quality Commission also identified 11 cases in which women were rushed to hospital after taking home abortion pills after the 10 week limit.
