Members of Sinn Fein, SDLP, and Alliance support killing unborn babies with disabilities, up to the moment of birth

Precious Life has condemned the pro-abortion members of the NI Assembly who voted against an amendment to recognise and protect the right to life of unborn babies with disabilities.

Of the 70 MLAs who voted, 33 voted in support of the amendment, but 37 MLAs voted against it.

The Assembly designation of the 33 who voted in support of the amendment was Unionist (DUP – 24; UUP – 4; TUV - 1) and ‘Nationalist’ (SDLP – 4)

The Assembly designation of the 37 who voted against the amendment was ‘Nationalist’ (Sinn Fein - 21 and SDLP - 3) and ‘Other’ (Alliance Party – 13)

The Assembly debated a motion yesterday (Tuesday 25 Nov 2024)  to bring forward legislation to incorporate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into local legislation.

The motion called for the Assembly to support the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society, and commit to reducing any inequalities faced by people with disabilities.

A pro-life amendment tabled by DUP MLAs - Brian Kingston, Harry Harvey, and Diane Dodds - asked the Assembly to recognise that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities affirms that every human being has the inherent right to life; and therefore the abortion of babies with disabilities is contrary to that view.

This amendment was supported by the DUP, TUV and 4 members of the SDLP (Mark Durkan, Daniel McCrossan. Patsy McGlone, and Colin McGrath)

However the amendment was defeated when pro-abortion members of Sinn Fein, SDLP, and Alliance Party voted to reject acknowledging the right to life of disabled babies.

In 2017, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities said abortion on grounds of disability violate the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, even if the condition is considered “fatal.” The UN Committee stated, “…Often it cannot be said if an impairment is fatal. Experience shows that assessments on impairment conditions are often false. Even if it is not false, the assessment perpetuates notions of stereotyping disability as incompatible with a good life.“

The hypocrisy of these pro-abortion MLAS is horrendous. While claiming to support "the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society"; they support the killing of people with disabilities  before birth, and never allow them to become members of society.

They “lament” the lack of progress on equality legislation for people with disabilities in Northern Ireland; but don’t lament for the 8490 babies killed by abortion since 2020 who were denied the very right to life itself.

These pro-abortion MLAs support ‘eugenics discrimination’. To kill a child in the womb for reasons of his or her disability sends a clear discriminatory message that those people with the same disability should not have been born, and that their lives are not worth living. Babies with disabilities are no less human than other children and share the same right to life as all other human beings.
