“Don’t Spill Irish Blood on Scottish Soil,” says Bernadette Smyth

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last Thursday stated that she would explore the possibility that women from Northern Ireland could access abortions through the NHS in Scotland:

"I am happy to explore with the NHS what the situation is now in terms of the ability of women from Northern Ireland to access safe and legal abortion in NHS Scotland and whether any improvements can be made.”

In response to Sturgeon’s announcement earlier today, Bernadette Smyth, the director of Precious Life, the leading pro-life group in Northern Ireland, stated:

“How dare Ms Sturgeon target Northern Ireland’s unborn children. Her comments today reveal that Northern Ireland’s unborn children are in her cross hairs. This is greatly disturbing news to the pro-life majority in Northern Ireland who want mothers and their unborn children protected from abortion, no matter who commits the abominable act of exploiting a vulnerable woman and killing her unborn child, and no matter where that abominable act takes place. Sturgeon must take her aim off women and unborn children in Northern Ireland.

“There is no health crisis in Northern Ireland. Women do not need abortion; it is not a health issue. It is a criminal offence which exists to protect both mothers and their unborn children.

“To make provisions for women to access free abortions in Scotland would be to run roughshod over the law and the democratic process in Northern Ireland. This will not go unchallenged. There will be a public outcry.”
