Sign the petition calling on Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to Respect Democracy
On 17th November 2016, in response to a question from Patrick Harvie MSP in the Scottish Parliament, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that she would explore the possibility of women from Northern Ireland accessing abortions through the NHS in Scotland:
"I am happy to explore with the NHS what the situation is now in terms of the ability of women from Northern Ireland to access safe and legal abortion in NHS Scotland and whether any improvements can be made.”
Ms Sturgeon thinks that abortion “is a part of healthcare”, but abortion has nothing to do with healthcare. It is the direct and intentional killing of an unborn child, which is why it is a criminal offence in Northern Ireland. Of course, abortion is a tragedy no matter where it is committed, no matter who commits it, and no matter how little or how much it costs. The prospect of women from Northern Ireland being granted a ‘free pass’ to abort their unborn babies in Scotland was greatly disturbing to the pro-life majority in Northern Ireland.
Speaking at an event in Dublin on Tuesday 29thNovember 2016, Ms Sturgeon confirmed that the Scottish Parliament would hold talks with the Scottish NHS leaders to establish whether it might be possible for women to access free abortions in Scotland.
But what about our political leaders?
Abortion is a criminal offence in Northern Ireland because the pro-life majority here have been voting ‘pro-life’ in every election to ensure that unborn children continue to be recognised and respected as a person in law, policy and practice in Northern Ireland. Our political leaders respect the wishes of the electorate by doing everything in their power to ensure that our pro-life laws and the protection afforded to women and their unborn children are not undermined in any way.
But this is exactly what Nicola Sturgeon is threatening to do.
To grant women from Northern Ireland a ‘free pass’ to abort their unborn babies in Scotland is to fly in the face of democracy by completely disregarding the will of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the people of Northern Ireland.
Please sign this petition to tell Nicola Sturgeon that:
- Abortion is not healthcare; it is a criminal offence in Northern Ireland. Our pro-life laws are there to protect women and children and are not for “NHS leaders” or other governments to interfere with.
- The Scottish Parliament must respect democracy by abandoning its plans to open a gateway for women from Northern Ireland to access free abortions under the 1967 Abortion Act which permits the killing of over 200,000 innocent unborn children in Britain every year.
