UPDATE: Varadkar announces life or death referendum on abortion will take place in late May
Formal approval has been given to the holding of a potentially devastating Irish abortion referendum. On Monday night in a Press Conference following a Cabinet meeting with Health Minister Coveney and Children’s Minister Zappone, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar stated that the referendum will take place in late May, and he is “confident that this timeline can be met.”
Protection for unborn is set to potentially be repealed completely, leaving the vulnerable unborn child without any constitutional protection whatsoever. Is that really a situation the Irish people want?
A massive influx of money from George Soros’ open foundation, alongside a heavily biased media and international pressure has brought Ireland to the unthinkable scenario whereby the right to life itself, as unalienable as it is, is being put to a vote. Surely it should be a universal precedent that murder is always wrong, and that it is a bad thing to allow people to vote away the rights of others? In this case, it is a unique injustice as those whose right to life is being put up for debate are too vulnerable and out of sight to speak for themselves.
Of course, people’s lives are complex, the situations we find ourselves in can be complicated, and many women do go through complications and difficulties in pregnancy. However, this is not a complex issue. It is in fact a very black and white issue: to take innocent human life is always wrong. Yet according to Leo Varadkar in a press release following the meeting, he described the deliberate taking of innocent human life and the subsequent spiritual, moral, physical and mental turmoil faced by women as, “an issue which is not black and white, can never be black and white.” Shockingly, never once did the reality of the unborn child form any part of the Oireachtas committee’s discussion on the eighth. The unborn child has been left out of the discussion surrounding its own fate.
Furthermore, Varadkar described the decision to call a referendum to allow for the poisoning and dismemberment of innocent babies in the womb as, “a collective act of leadership to show empathy and compassion.”
The Taoiseach has announced polling for the end of May, pending Dáil and Seanad approval in time. The Repeal-and-enable bill will be the 36th Amendment to the Constitution.
The draft Referendum Question is: "That provision may be made by law for the regulation of the termination of pregnancy."
The Cabinet agreed on all three measures
1. To hold referendum on abortion
2. To get Health Minister to draft referendum bill
3. To get Health Minister to draft proposed new abortion laws if 8th is repealed
There was unanimity around the question of holding a referendum, but Simon Coveney was among those expressing concern about the ‘12 weeks’ proposals which would be pursued following a Yes vote.
Furthermore, ‘Safe, Legal and Rare’ looks like the sentence they’re going to use to appeal voters, of course, conveniently ignoring Harris’ promise for free abortions. The pill which brings on miscarriage will have to be prescribed by a GP from a legal register. The Irish PM says repeal will also untie hands of future Dail's to change our abortion law as they see fit, and of course, the Irish people must be aware that once we alter the Constitution, this will never once go back to the people. With a yes vote, the Irish people will have completely lost control – we will undeniably have abortion on demand up to birth.
Ironically, two of the three people giving the press conference were pro-life no less than 5 years ago, evidencing just little we can trust politicians to keep abortion only at 12 weeks.
Leo Varadkar tweeted: ‘the question has to be a Yes or No one; do we reform our abortion laws or not? I will advocate for a Yes vote. My own views on abortion have evolved over time. Life experience does that. As Minister for Health I became convinced abortion had no place in the Constitution.’
Tánaiste Simon Coveney told colleagues he can’t support recommendation of abortion for 12 weeks without restriction. Yet, clearly not understanding the full implications of repeal, he will support repeal and all other committee recommendations.
If abortion is introduced into Ireland, there will be absolutely no protection for innocent unborn children. Let us remind you, that there is absolutely no such thing as “restricted” or “limited” abortion. Clips from members of the eighth committee alone are enough to prove that abortion advocates here are demanding full abortion access – abortion laws which would turn a blind eye to eugenics, or to choosing to kill a baby because that child is the ‘wrong’ gender. Abortion advocates from the fraudulent, rigged eighth committee reveal their views that the recommendation of abortion without limit up to 12 weeks simply ‘don’t go far enough,’ and these opponents of life are on the record saying that they will not stop until they get ‘full bodily autonomy.’ This is enough to prove that abortion in Ireland would never be limited to just ‘fatal foetal abnormalities’ or a 12 week time limit. If the Irish people vote yes, we have handed full rein over to the Oireachtas, and of course we know that can’t trust any (most) of them to stand firm to any position.
Throughout the world, countries who now have the most permissive, disturbing and ultra-liberal abortion laws once introduced abortion on narrow grounds, promising abortion would only be accepted in rare cases where women’s lives were at risk. With a Yes vote, Ireland would soon become the abortion capital of the world. In the United Kingdom, 90% of babies with Down’s syndrome are aborted. 98% of all abortions are performed for social reasons. Every three minutes, a child is torn limb from limb in the womb.
Please do not let that happen in Ireland. We must unite and fight with all our passion, strength and energy to save the right to life and promote life, a choice which protects, loves and cherishes the equally worthy lives of both mother and baby.
Join Precious Life today. The time is NOW to stand up, speak out, and save mothers and unborn babies from the horror of abortion.
