Precious Life respond to pro-abortion report

Precious Life yesterday, on International Human Rights Day, responded to the pro-abortion NI Human Rights Commission releasing a report calling for the repeal of Northern Ireland’s pro-life laws. The report comes as part of a concerted and ferocious campaign to erode NI’s legal protection for the unborn, and decriminalisation is a euphemism for making abortion legal for any reason up to and including the moment of birth.

This comission can't claim to stand for human rights when they are attempting to strip all unborn babies of their fundamental human right to life. Precious Life Director Bernadette Smyth yesterday slammed this report from the abortion lobby: “This report disregards our democratic process and represents a shrewd disrespect for the people of Northern Ireland, the majority of whom repeatedly voted for pro-life politicians. It also illustrates a blatant disregard and intolerance for the human rights of the unborn."

Mrs Smyth went on to say, "There is no human right to abortion under any international legal treaty, convention or instrument. The human right to life, on the other hand, is the most fundamental, universal right enshrined in international law including the European Convention on Human Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights."

She continued, "If someone abides by the law, they won't be criminalised. Our laws safeguard mothers and unborn babies. We have the lowest maternal mortality rate in the UK and one of the lowest in the world. Northern Ireland is one of the safest places for pregnant women. Our two-patient care model protects and saves all humans involved in a pregnancy. The people of Northern Ireland have repeatedly supported our pro-life campaigns with over 300,000 people signing our petition postcards over recent years."

Mrs Smyth concluded, "Without the human right to life, all other human rights are utterly meaningless. As stated in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, 'the child, by reason of his or her physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.'"
