Precious Life demand answers from Northern Ireland's Department of Health

Precious Life today responded to the publication of Northern Ireland’s Department of Health’s annual termination of pregnancy statistics, which show that 12 abortions were carried out in Northern Ireland in 2017/2018. Whilst these figures show a steady decrease in the number of abortions performed in Northern Ireland since 2012, questions still need to be asked as to the reasons for the abortions.

Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth, said that "Precious Life will be sending Freedom of Information questions to Northern Ireland's Department of Health to demand answers as to whether these 12 abortions were direct or indirect abortions."

Mrs Smyth concluded, "The Law in Northern Ireland is very clear. Abortion is a criminal offence and is governed under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and the Criminal Justice Act (NI) 1945. Both pieces of legislation ensure that mothers and unborn children are protected in law, policy and practise."
