PRESS RELEASE: Precious Life slam 'Derry Girls' abortion propaganda
-- PRESS RELEASE --
Date: 22nd February 2019
Northern Ireland's leading pro-life group Precious Life have slammed actresses from the hit TV show Derry Girls for using their platform to promote abortion. Precious Life are responding following the news that actresses in the hit TV show are heading to Westminster to demand changes to Northern Ireland’s abortion laws. Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin in the popular Channel 4 series, and Siobhan McSweeney, who plays Sister Michael, will join 26 other women in a protest next week to demand that abortion be legalised in Northern Ireland.
Amnesty International, an organisation which campaigns for abortion to be introduced up to birth throughout the entire UK, is organising the event.
Bernadette Smyth of Precious Life today responded to news of the publicity stunt. She said, "It's truly disgusting that these actresses are abusing their very public profile and platform to promote the killing of defenceless unborn babies. Northern Ireland's pro-life laws protect women and babies from the tragedy, pain and violence of abortion. It's clear from our activism that there is very little on the ground demand for abortion.
Bernadette Smyth continued, "Over 100,000 people are alive today because of our existing laws. This is acknowledged by the majority of people living in Northern Ireland who, through elected representatives, have persistently voted to uphold the law as it stands. This was last made clear in February 2016. Westminster has no right to override devolved democratic decisions. These actresses need to respect devolution and the democratic will of the people of Northern Ireland."
Bernadette Smyth concluded, "These actresses should consider using their gifts and talents to instead promote better support services for women finding themselves in unplanned pregnancies. Instead of promoting the violence of abortion, a much more compassionate response would be to support women feeling powerless and afraid so that they feel empowered to choose life and protect their own well-being also. It is never compassionate to destroy a human life."
