PRESS RELEASE: "One of Us" at the Court of Justice of the EU
Today (25 Mar), at 2.30pm, a hearing will take place at the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg) for the case One of Us v. the European Commission. Precious Life, Northern Ireland's leading pro-life group, were heavily involved in the 'One of Us' petition campaign that was registered by the European Commission on 11 May 2012 until its closure, on 1 November 2013.
Bernadette Smyth, Director of Precious Life, commented on today's hearing, "This pro-life petition is still the largest citizens’ initiative in the history of the EU. Dozens of organisations, including Precious Life, and thousands of committed volunteers worked to officially collect 1,721,626 signatures calling for a ban of European funding of programs involving the destruction of unborn children at any stage of development."
Bernadette Smyth continued, "On 28 May 2014, the Commission published its Communication, refusing to follow up on the initiative. This is unacceptable and incredibly unjust considering the time and effort put it in to this very successful, life-saving campaign."
Bernadette Smyth concluded, "Nearly 2 million people across Europe used their voices for those who have no voice: unborn children. These pro-life citizens cannot be silenced - speaking up for the most innocent and defenceless members of our society. We hope and pray for an effective, pro-life outcome today following such a powerful campaign that Precious Life was honoured to help with!"
