NI Secretary of the State calls for Stormont to be reconvened

Precious Life welcome the Secretary of the State for Northern Ireland, MP Julian Smith, calling for Stormont to be reconvened before Monday (Oct 21). Mr Smith has announced that parties will be meeting on Thursday and Friday. He said, “I will be working all week this week to ensure that I do everything I can to encourage political leaders to get back into an Executive and ensure that they can shape the abortion laws for Northern Ireland and take the political decisions that are needed in the best interests of ALL Northern Ireland citizens.”

On Monday evening the Secretary of State said that he had met with DUP leader Arlene Foster. "A busy week ahead working with all parties to get Stormont back up and running," he tweeted.

On the other hand, Sinn Féin vice-president Michelle O'Neill described the DUP’s move to reconvene Stormont as "a pointless political stunt". Trying to save innocent unborn babies from being slaughtered is not a ‘stunt.’

Mr Smith made it abundantly clear that the particular law being forced on Northern Ireland is too extreme. Therefore, it is the duty of our political representatives to agree to form a Power-Sharing Executive before Monday to prevent this law being imposed against the wishes of the people:

“Church leaders, community groups and citizens are also really worried that the abortion reforms that are going to be made law next Monday could be made more tailored and more shaped for the interests of Northern Ireland.”

This undemocratic law does NOT represent the views of the majority of people in Northern Ireland who have always voted for pro-life politicians to uphold our current legislation that safeguards every person, born and unborn. Our two-patient model in Northern Ireland has led to over 100,000 lives being saved. We have the lowest maternal mortality rate in the UK and one of the lowest worldwide. Northern Ireland is one of the safest places for pregnant women and their babies.
