Court ruling sets precedent for use of unregulated abortion pills

Just ONE DAY after Westminster’s anti-democratic abortion regime was forced on Northern Ireland, a mother who bought illegal abortion pills for her daughter, back in 2013, was acquitted. The case began after the defendant’s GP alerted police and then the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland took on the case. The defendant was charged her with two counts of unlawfully procuring and supplying abortions drugs with intent to procure a miscarriage contrary to the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act.

The judge for the case, David McFarland, directed a jury at Belfast crown court on Wednesday to find the woman not guilty. Following the imposition of this inhumane British abortion law on Northern Ireland, which has legalised abortion up to 28 weeks (7 months), any ongoing prosecutions are to be discontinued. Despite this definitive aspect of the law – other areas are unclear and ambiguous. For example, there seems to be no conscientious objection for medical professionals who do not want to be complicit, in any way, in an abortion.

The tragedy of this law is not only that it will kill thousands – if not million – of preborn children in Northern Ireland but that it will endanger women. Unregulated, dangerous abortion pills will now be accessible for any pregnant woman, young girl or anyone trying to coerce someone to get an abortion.

Medical professionals have consistently warned women not to take abortion drugs. Since 2001, at least 22 women worldwide have died from haemorrhage, toxic shock, sepsis, organ failure and ruptured ectopic pregnancy following an early abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol. China have actually banned the abortion pill being sold in drugstores “in order to guarantee public safety.”

The fight goes on! The law may have changed but the facts remain the same. Women deserve so much better than the violence of abortion. Precious Life will increase campaigns to ensure women are getting better crisis pregnancy care, love and support in Northern Ireland. We will continue to fight back to make abortion once again illegal and unthinkable!
