Press Release - Precious Life vow to keep fighting until 'every unborn child is safe from the horror of abortion.'
Northern Ireland’s leading pro-life group Precious Life have vowed to keep fighting until every unborn child is safe from the horror of abortion. Following pressure from radical pro-death abortion groups, the Department of Health announced yesterday (Thursday 9th April) that the killing of unborn children will now be lawfully available in health and social care facilities across Northern Ireland.
In response, Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said, “Even in the midst of the COVID crisis, when people in Northern Ireland are united under a shared understanding that all life is precious, the killing of unborn children has been introduced. At a time when the focus is directed towards saving lives, it will now be legal to take the lives of the most vulnerable and voiceless of all through the violence of abortion.”
Ms Smyth said that the introduction of a permissive and extreme abortion regime was not in the name of the people of Northern Ireland.
She said, “This law, which allows abortion up to 6 months (24 weeks) on demand and up to birth for babies with disabilities, such as Down’s Syndrome, is not in the name of the people. People in Northern Ireland must be commended for the huge effort they have made over the years to stand for life and protect mothers and babies from abortion. The electorate here have persistently voted for pro-life politicians over the years, and in recent months, thousands of people attended public events and marches, wrote to their MLAs, visited constituency offices, made phone calls, and responded to consultations and enquiries.”
Continuing, Ms Smyth said, “The people have repeatedly told the UK Government that they do not want abortion legal, including in the recent NIO consultation – 79% of the tens of thousands who responded said they did not want to see any change to our pro-life laws. The imposition of this permissive and extreme law has been resisted valiantly, and we want to thank every single person who stood up for children who had no voice to stand up for themselves. This decision goes against human decency and compassion, and it is a shocking betrayal of democracy and the principles of devolution.”
Ms Smyth said Precious Life would continue to fight for the rights of unborn children, and would work to provide life-affirming alternatives to abortion-vulnerable women until abortion becomes illegal and unthinkable in Northern Ireland.
“This is not the end of our fight for unborn children and their mothers. We have tragically entered a new phase in this battle for justice, but we will only accelerate our efforts to save babies and their mothers from the destruction of abortion. We will focus on providing care and support for women to choose life for their children, and our work will not stop until abortion becomes illegal and unthinkable in Northern Ireland. With the support of the pro-life majority in Northern Ireland, the repeal of this inhumane and barbaric law will become a reality," she concluded.
